The lithium-ion-polymer ( LiPo ) packs are the successors to the well-known lithium-ion ( LiIon ) packs. The main advantage of LiPo batteries is undoubtedly the capacity to size ratio. They are very small in size while maintaining a very high current capacity, which allows you to choose the right pack for virtually any AEG replica. They have no memory effect. They can be charged very often, without any previous discharge. Frequent charging is beneficial for this type of battery.
It is important to remember not to discharge the LiPo package below 3V per cell and not to overcharge above 4.2V per cell. Another advantage of LiPo packages is a small percentage of self-discharge. An unused package loses about 3-5% of its energy on a monthly basis. The pack should be monitored, as during a very long period of storage, it can be discharged below the minimum allowable value (3V per cell) and irreversible chemical reactions that can cause a deterioration of the properties of the pack including its permanent damage, and in extreme cases – an ignition. An unused LiPo pack should be charged on average in about 70%.
When used correctly, the life span of a LiPo pack is 500-700 cycles on average. An important aspect is the temperature at which LiPo packages can operate. Unlike other batteries, LiPo cells perform well at low temperatures. They should be charged at room temperature. In order to keep the batteries in good condition, they should be balanced during charging by using the service plug, which most of the LiPo packages have (a good LiPo charger has a built-in balancer).
